Full Day Aboriginal Weaving, Rainforest and Art Deco
Departing from Cairns
From Cairns travel south to the art deco town of Innisfail. Join the Jitta Art family who share their knowledge and history of weaving natural fibers. Experience how hand skills are mastered in cutting, bending, folding, knotting, splicing, splitting, stripping and weaving. Discover how these ancient skills carry a strong connection to culture for Rainforest Aboriginal people. Weave your own pandan bracelet as a souvenir of your cultural experience.
After lunch discover Innisfail which hides an urban beauty of streets lined with Art Deco treasures.
Innisfail is becoming recognised as one of the great Art Deco towns of Australia, with the CBD showcasing one of the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the country.
From Innisfail travel to Babinda Boulders to experience the lush vibrant rainforest. The area is made up of fast flowing creeks that weave through huge granite boulders and ancient tropical rainforest. The sparkling, cascading streams creates large pools of cool and refreshing mountain water, providing the perfect area for an afternoon swim before the return journey to Cairns.
Our intention is to activate a collective practice using natural fibers to keep our culture alive.
